How Carbohydrates, Stress And Pesticides Contribute To Cancer

Cancer rates have skyrocketed, we are seeing cancers in younger and younger patients every year. It has become the new normal.

While many experts will tell you if you live long enough you develop cancer, it wasn’t always like this.

The focus in mainstream medicine is to state cancers are unrelated to each other and have specific genetic markers. While on one hand, this is correct, it is also misleading.

Yes, there are specific genetic tendencies for certain cancers, not everyone with the genetic markers in common will express the cancers associated with the marker. Epigenetics has more to do with disease expression than our purely inherited set of genes. Epigenetics is the effect of our environment (think food, toxins, drugs, pollution, emotional stress) on our genetic expression.

All cancers require lots of fuel to grow. The only fuel cancer cells can use is glucose and they need about 19 times more glucose for the same energy production as a healthy cell. While our healthy cells can and do use glucose, they can also use an alternate source of fuel.

Our brain cells love ketones as alternate fuel, the heart prefers ketones and muscles use fatty acids at rest and glucose or ketones (depending upon state of person) during activity.

Many articles one finds, omits information regarding the brain’s preference for ketones and/or refers to it’s use of ketones only during starvation. Nutritional ketosis is not starvation in terms of muscle loss or weakness as side effects. However, some of the beneficial outcomes of starvation are seen such as ketone production, reduced oxidative damage, reduced inflammatory markers and more.

In order for normal cells to become cancerous, they need to have ample glucose as well as mitochondrial damage. Mitochondria are the engines of cells which use fuel to produce energy for the cell.

Over time, cells become insulin resistant meaning they require more and more insulin to carry glucose into the cell for energy. Insulin is also a growth hormone. Over time, many people become less resilient to stress which promotes more and more stress hormones to deal with daily situations. Stress hormones promote production of glucose from substrates such as stored glycogen and proteins from diet or muscle tissue. So if this insulin resistance and loss of stress resilience is allowed to happen unchecked, we have a recipe for cancer.

Add into the mix, toxins such as pesticide residue in much of the commercial food and we see even more issues regarding detoxification, methylation and even problematic gut bacteria which ultimately lead to more insulin resistance and increased stress via many pathways which will be discussed in future blog posts.

Pesticide residue is found in many foods but is in high concentrations in GMO cooking oils such as canola, soy, corn and cottonseed. While you might not buy these oils for cooking at home, all but the finest (or organic) restaurants use these oils for cooking and for salad dressing. Even if they say they have olive oil, it is almost always cut with GMO canola or soy oil. This translates into a hard and cold reality. Dining in top notch restaurants or ones committed to bringing you local and organic food, are truly the only safe places to avoid pesticide laden oils.

Working successfully with cancer patients requires a multifaceted approach, one in which the patient is actively involved, involving diet, stress reduction and when appropriate, other measures.

There are many disease states other than cancer which may arise from high stress, high glucose levels and a toxic diet. Cancer is but one of the many chronic and debilitating disease which can arise from a brewing storm of inflammation, insulin resistance, high carbohydrate diets and a sedentary life.

Prevention should always be preferred to crisis intervention. I encourage all my patients to be mindful of body-mind-spirit which includes treating their bodies with the respect and care it deserves. To wait until the presence of a serious disease before you clean up your diet, learn to meditate or take up exercise, is not the best choice. It is imperative once you have a diagnosis and wise to do so, before.
